Tennessee basketball was pulling away in the second half of the Vols’ 84-66 win against Ole Miss when Rebels’ head coach Chris Beard stormed onto the court and erupted on the officials, earning double technical fouls and an ejection.
It came after Bishop Boswell and Ja’Kobi Gillespie each went for a steal on Ole Miss big man Augusto Cassia. Gillespie eventually snatched the ball from Cassia before Beard stormed onto the court while play was still going on.
“I mean, the free-throw differential in this game and the foul differential in this game, just frustrating from a coaching standpoint and a playing standpoint,” Beard said postgame. “It’s never personal. These are the best officials in college basketball. I can say things like that because I’ve been at all different levels.
“I know what average officials look like, I know what poor officials look like. These are the best. But on tonight’s game, the free-throw differential, the fouls called differential, at some point as a coach you have to fight for your players. That’s exactly what happened tonight.”
At the time of the double technical fouls, the officials had whistled Ole Miss for 14 second half fouls and Tennessee for nine second half fouls. In the first half, Ole Miss committed seven fouls and Tennessee committed four fouls.
The away locker room at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center is in the opposite corner of the away bench. Beard walked to the opposite corner of the bench before sprinting back to the bench to fire up his players.

More From RTI: Three Quick Takeaways As Tennessee Basketball Torches Ole Miss With Massive Second Half
Tennessee led 67-51 at the time of the technical foul and then 70-51 by the time Ja’Kobi Gillespie made three of the ensuing four free throws.
The double technicals did not spark Ole Miss’ team. Tennessee outscored the Rebels 12-1 immediately following the technical foul. It was apart of an extended 21-4 run where the Vols officially put the game away.
Beard compared his defense of his players to what Rick Barnes did early in his career while he was head coach at Clemson, challenging officials and legendary North Carolina head coach Dean Smith to defend his players and program.
“You have a Hall of Fame coach here, first ballot, one of the best that’s ever done it,” Beard said. “And I think if you look back at different spots in his career, he had to fight for his program. … Wherever coach Barnes was at — Clemson, is that right? Do your homework tonight. All that stuff is on YouTube. I think all we ask for is a consistent whistle.”
Tennessee led by just one half against Ole Miss before dominating the Rebels in the second half, pushing its lead to as much as 27 points before settling into an 18-point victory. It marked the Vols’ fourth straight victory and Ole Miss’ fourth straight loss.
The Vols boast a 6-3 SEC record heading into Saturday night’s showdown against Kentucky at Rupp Arena. Ole Miss is now 3-6 in league play and travels to Texas to face the Longhorns.
