Tennessee Basketball is viewed as one of the best jobs in the SEC, as voted on by anonymous veteran head coaches and assistant coaches from around the league. The Field of 68 released a poll on Wednesday morning ranking all 16 SEC teams in order of best jobs in the conference. According to Jeff Goodman, there were no specific voting requirements set for the head coaches and assistants that participated in the poll; “each coach was able to utilize their own specific parameters to determine their list from top to bottom.”

Goodman notes that while recruiting investments and facilities have always been a factor in determining the ranks, NIL and financial resources now play an obvious role in the mix as well.

Tennessee landed the 4th spot in the rankings with 212 total points. The Vols trail No. 1 Kentucky with 256 points, No. 2 Texas with 222 points, and No. 3 Arkansas with 218 points.

There isn’t a specific write-up on Tennessee’s spot on the list, but Goodman did give quotes about the three schools above UT in the poll. In summary, Kentucky is ranked at the top spot because of “the resources, fan support and obviously the money,” with the administration essentially being forced to support the program “at the highest level.”

Texas is also noted for having a major financial investment in the program. Despite not being looked at as a basketball-first type of school, one anonymous voter still says that Texas has “the money to go get dudes.”

Arkansas is in the same boat as the other two. In addition to having a “ton of money” for the program, it’s also noted that the Razorbacks care about basketball and have an “incredibly passionate fanbase” in Fayetteville.

Tennessee’s basketball program has been revitalized during Rick Barnes’ 11 years as the head coach in Knoxville. He’s taken UT to seven straight NCAA tournaments (2020 postseason not held due to COVID) and is on pace for an eighth consecutive trip this season. Under Barnes, Tennessee has seen two trips to the Sweet 16 and two trips to the Elite Eight.

Tennessee also holds one of the top fanbases in the country. With the ability to pack more than 21,000 fans into the Food City Center for home games, plus rivals that are close enough for Vol fans to keep a presence during away games, the Vols’ fanbase is one of the best in the country and in the conference. Its fans are starving for a trip to the Final Four and beyond, but have shown that they’ll back the program at this level.
