Tennessee football’s defense is going to look a lot different from both a schematic and personnel standpoint next season. With Jim Knowles taking over as defensive coordinator, he’s attacked the transfer portal and brought in a good number of new pieces that are expected to contribute right away.
The area that is getting the most overhaul is the secondary. This also includes the push for landing top talent through the traditional recruiting route. On Monday, Knowles and Tennessee got some good news on that front. Three-star cornerback recruit Jacob Whitehead named UT in his top schools list.
The Vols join Auburn, USC, Texas, Miami, Florida, Missouri and Texas A&M as his top eight.

Whitehead is ranked as a three-star prospect on 247, Rivals and ESPN. On 247 Composite, he is considered the No. 442 player in the 2027 class. He is also the No. 44 cornerback and No. 37 player from California. He currently plays for Crean Lutheran out of Irvine.
Whitehead picked up his Tennessee offer back in March of this past year. During that ensuing season, he took a game day visit to see the Vols dismantle New Mexico State in Neyland Stadium.
“Whitehead had his coming out party at the All-American Combine in January where he earned all-combine honors and an invite to the ’27 All-American Bowl,” 247 national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins wrote last year. “He’s a long physical press man corner and uses his length to disrupt and re-direct opposing receivers. For his size, he’s technically sound and does a nice job playing the football…”
Tennessee already holds four commitments in the 2027 class. This includes four-star tackle Princeton Uwaifo, four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife, three-star linebacker JP Peace and three-star cornerback Kamauri Whitfield. The class is still young, though, and plenty more commitments are expected to trickle in over the next year.
