Tennessee football’s 2027 class suffered a hit on Friday morning. Cornerback Kamauri Whitfield announced he has decommitted from the Vols. He had been verbally committed since Oct. 15, 2025.

Whitfield is considered a three-star recruit by 247. The site’s composite rankings list him as the No. 443 player in the country, No. 44 cornerback and No. 48 player from the state of Florida. He plays for The First Academy out of Orlando.

According to 247, Whitfield has a pair of upcoming official visits set up now. He will be at Florida on May 28 and Nebraska on June 12.

Whitfield’s decommitment comes just days after Tennessee cornerbacks coach Michael Hunter Jr. left the program to take a job with the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL. However, it’s unfair to fully pin that move as the sole reason for Whitfield’s departure. He was initially committed to Tim Banks’ defense, with Willie Martinez serving as his primary recruiter. Neither Banks nor Martinez is still with the program.

With the firing of Banks, Josh Heupel tabbed Jim Knowles as the program’s new defensive coordinator. Knowles hired Anthony Poindexter as the team’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach and Hunter as the cornerbacks coach. Now, he’ll be looking to replace Hunter with spring ball just around the corner.

The 2027 class for Tennessee now holds just four commitments, though it’s still early in the cycle. The group ranked as the No. 12 group in the country on 247 with Whitfield in the boat, but should fall now that he is no longer committed.

The headliner of the group is in-state offensive tackle Princeton Uwaifo. He is the No. 111 player in the class and No. 11 tackle. UT also landed its quarterback this week, three-star Derrick Baker out of Georgia. The other two commits are four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife and three-star legacy linebacker JP Peace.
