On Friday afternoon, Tennessee football’s 2025 starting quarterback, Joey Aguilar, was delivered some bad news. After an eligibility hearing last Friday, a judge ruled against his request for a preliminary injunction that would’ve allowed him to return to the Vols next season.
Despite dealing with the fallout of his college career officially ending, Aguilar was seen in public shortly after. He’s in attendance at Tennessee baseball’s Friday evening clash with Kent State in Knoxville at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Aguilar spent just one season at Tennessee, joining in the spring window. He played two years at the junior college level before transferring to Appalachian State, where he played another pair. He was granted another year of eligibility after a Diego Pavia ruling led to the NCAA creating a blanket waiver for JUCO players out of eligibility during that athletic year.
Aguilar transferred to UCLA with the news of his additional year, where he went through spring camp. However, when Tennessee and Nico Iamaleava went through a messy divorce, Iamaleava left for UCLA, leading to Aguilar re-entering the transfer portal. He quickly committed to Tennessee, where he led the SEC in passing with 3,565 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
