Tennessee Baseball Rolling With The Same Rotation

Tennessee baseball is keeping its starting rotation the same as it was last weekend against Kent State. Tegan Kuhns will start against UCLA before Landon Mack gets the ball against Arizona State and Evan Blanco gets the ball against Virginia Tech.

None of the three were close to Tennessee’s biggest issue last weekend against Kent State but the Vols will need solid outings this weekend as they face greater competition.

A Quick Look At The Three Opponents

UCLA is the headliner this weekend. They’re the No. 1 team in the country after sweeping TCU last weekend but before dropping a midweek game against San Diego State earlier this week.

Arizona State has the looks of an early surprise team nationally. They swept weekend series with Omaha and St. John’s before splitting two midweek games with Oklahoma earlier this week. The Sun Devils have mostly rolled past their competition this season.

Virginia Tech’s lone loss the season was a 16-1 defeat against Rutgers, but they’ve won a ton of close games so far. The Hokies had a one-run win against William & Mary, two against Rutgers, one against James Madison and a two-run win against ETSU.

Tennessee’s opponents get progressively worse over the course of the weekend in Arlington.

Some Quick Injury Notes

Utility man Garrett Wright made his Tennessee debut Tuesday night, coming in as a defensive sub in centerfield. He’s unlikely to be any more than that this weekend after breaking his hamate bone during preseason practice. He’s catching and swinging a bat more but still has some time before he does those two things in games.

Fellow utility man Blake Grimmer remains sidelined with locker back injury. Josh Elander says he’s probably still a little ways away from getting out on the field.

Look for left-handed pitcher Cameron Appenzeller to have a bigger role this weekend after tossing just one inning Tuesday against Bellarmine. He has not been injured but did not throw last weekend against Kent State as the Vols’ monitor his pitch count early this season.
