From a marathon on the high school recruiting trail to a sprint with the transfer portal this past winter, Tennessee Football worked hard to add as much talent as possible to its roster as the Volunteers gear up for Josh Heupel’s sixth year at the helm next fall.
Like any program in the country, Tennessee obviously lost some key players through the transfer portal and graduation after the 2025 season. But the Vols also made sure to fill some key gaps and add depth to specific positions with spring camp on the horizon.
According to 247Sports, Tennessee is adding 52 players to the roster this offseason through both high school recruiting and the transfer portal. The Vols finished the 2026 cycle with the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the nation with two five-stars, 13 four-stars, and 16 three-star players. Tennessee also hauled in the 21st-ranked transfer class with 21 total portal additions.
When looking at all incoming players together, from both the high school ranks and the transfer portal, ESPN gives Tennessee the 14th-best newcomer class in the country. ESPN’s Craig Haubert and Billy Tucker name the Vols’ top recruits as WR Tristen “TK” Keys, WR Tyreek King, QB Faizon Brandon, DE Jordan Carter, DB Joel Wyatt, and OL Gabriel Osenda.
Haubert and Tucker also named Tennessee’s biggest transfer additions as EDGE Chaz Coleman, CB Kayin Lee, safety TJ Metcalf, LB Amare Campbell, DT Xavier Gilliam, and safety Dejuan Lane.
There’s zero issue with the players that ESPN listed here as Tennessee’s top additions. For something that can have a bit of fluidity to it, this is a fine selection. But what’s more interesting is that it shows how Tennessee got some big-time offensive firepower to develop through the high school ranks, while much of the portal priorities revolved around getting new defensive players that can come in and compete right away. Tennessee needed to bolster its defense after a rough showing in 2025, and the portal is the best way to do that quickly.
“Tennessee’s portal class injects proven playmakers,” ESPN writes. “Coleman is an explosive pass rusher who can bend the edge, slip blocks and convert speed to power. He showed early production at Penn State, and he projects as a third‑down threat and rotational edge rusher with still longer-term upside (3 TFLs, one sack). Lee is a physical, Cover 2 boundary corner who reroutes at the line, closes quickly and sets the edge versus the run, which is ideal for press‑heavy matchups (17 pass breakups, three interceptions). With needs at safety, Metcalf is a tall, violent tackler with ball hawk instincts and range in zone.”
ESPN also mentions the familiarity that Lane, Campbell, and Gilliam have with Jim Knowles’ defensive scheme after playing under him with the Nittany Lions last season.

From the recruiting perspective, much of the class revolved around cornerstone quarterback Faizon Brandon. The five-star prospect will have the chance to come in and compete for Tennessee’s starting job right away with an ongoing quarterback battle taking place throughout the spring and fall. Brandon might not win the job over returning redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, but he’s got all the tools to be a statement player down the road.
“Brandon blends arm strength with good accuracy and nice touch on his deep ball,” ESPN writes. “Tennessee has more experienced options, but Brandon is someone to watch and could ultimately work his way into packages even if he doesn’t win the starting job. While the quarterback situation is unclear, the Vols’ 2026 class supplies some playmakers who can factor into the rotation quickly.”
ESPN’s writers also mention the big play ability from both Keys and King, as well as quality “bend and burst” from Gooden on the defensive line.
Tennessee lands as the sixth-ranked SEC team in ESPN’s newcomer rankings, behind No. 1 LSU, No. 4 Texas, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 Alabama, and No. 9 Texas A&M.
