Shortly after shining in a big-time 7-on-7 competition for Cam Newton’s team and winning the championship, Tennessee football quarterback commit Derrick Baker is back in the public eye. This time, he’s getting reps in at Elite 11 in Atlanta.

While Baker had gone relatively under-the-radar in his recruitment and earning just three-star status, he continues to play well above his rankings. Jeff Sentell of DawgNation said, ‘they don’t build QBs like that’ and projected a big-time senior season this year.

Here are some highlights from his performance on Saturday:

Baker is considered the No. 709 recruit in the country on 247 Composite. This slots him as the No. 43 quarterback and No. 84 player from Georgia in the cycle.

If Baker continues to play at this level in front of national scouts, he could surge up the rankings. Josh Heupel has had plenty of success recruiting quarterbacks, and seemingly might have found a diamond in the rough with this one.

Baker plays for Milton High School in the Peach State. The Vols have recruited the high school well under Josh Heupel, landing the likes of defensive backs Ty Redmond and Dylan Lewis from the program in the 2025 class.

Baker won’t join Tennessee until after this upcoming season as he prepares for his senior year with Milton. It’s tough to fully project what the Vols’ quarterback room will look like by then, though. Redshirt-freshman George MacIntyre, true freshman Faizon Brandon and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub are all rostered with multiple years of eligibility as they fight for the starting job.
