Tennessee football is coming off a strong defensive class in the 2026 cycle and is looking to parlay it into another good one in the 2027 class. In this effort, the Vols are in a great position with one of the best edge rushers in the group.

Four-star Derwin Fields is down to five schools, including Tennessee. UT joins Ole Miss, Texas, Miami and Georgia as the finalists, according to Rivals.

Fields stands at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, according to 247. He is considered the No. 217 player in the class, No. 21 edge rusher and No. 7 player from the state of Mississippi, according to the site. He is from Brookhaven, Mississippi.

Tennessee has recruited the state of Mississippi extremely well in recent years under Josh Heupel. In the 2026 class, the Vols landed five-star wide receiver TK Keys, four-star linebacker TJ White and four-star defensive lineman Dereon Albert.

This class will be constructed by new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and his staff, though. His LEOs coach is Andrew Jackson, but defensive line coach Rodney Garner may be involved with Fields, as well.

Tennessee is off to a strong start in the 2027 cycle. So far, UT has landed four commitments in the class. The Vols boast four-star offensive lineman Princeton Uwaifo as the headliner, with four-star Kadin Fife also in the boat. However, Fife is apparently back in the evaluation process after defensive staff changes.

Three-star quarterback Derrick Baker and legacy linebacker JP Peace are also committed. More commitments are expected to roll in throughout the offseason as the class heats up, though.
