Tennessee basketball transfer shooting guard Bishop Boswell committed to Maryland on Wednesday morning, On3’s Joe Tipton first reported. Boswell reportedly had a Zoom meeting with Maryland last week before visiting NC State on Sunday.

NC State seemed to be a natural fit for Boswell. New NC State head coach Justin Gainey was Boswell’s lead recruiter coming out of high school and Boswell is a Charlotte native.

Instead, Boswell lands in the Big 10 with former Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams. Boswell’s toughness and defensive mentality makes him a strong fit with Williams at Maryland. The Terrapins struggled in Williams’ first season as head coach, posting a 12-21 (4-16 Big 10) record.

Boswell is coming off a season where he averaged just 6.2 points over the course of the season but showed growth on that end of the court, shooting 42.7% from the field and 38.5% from three-point range. The 6-foot-3 guard was a do-it-all guard for Tennessee, averaging 4.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

The Charlotte native was slightly better in SEC play, averaging seven points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Boswell played well in the NCAA Tournament. He totaled 13 points, nine assists and three rebounds in the Round of 32 win over Virginia and four points, eight assists and four rebounds in the Sweet 16 win over Iowa State.

Boswell’s biggest strength was its ability to do multiple things. He is a good defender and his improvement handling the basketball over the course of the season was big for Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament.

Boswell is one of six Tennessee players to enter the transfer portal this offseason along with Clarence Massamba, Amari Evans, Cade Phillips, Jaylen Carey and J.P. Estrella.

Tennessee has landed three commits out of the transfer portal to date— Belmont sharpshooter Tyler Lundblade, Cal combo guard Dai Dai Ames and Loyola (Chicago) center Miles Rubin. The Vols are also heavily pursuing VCU combo guard Terrence Hill Jr, Wake Forest guard Juke Harris and Cal forward Jalen Haralson.
