Where This College Basketball Analyst Might Be Wrong About Tennessee’s Juke Harris and Terrence Hill Jr.

Tennessee has completely revamped its roster this offseason, choosing transfer portal production over retention as it makes a push to break through the ceiling that’s been the Elite Eight over the last three seasons. While the Vols did see six players leave the program when the portal opened up, Tennessee has now signed seven new players to re-fill those roles with an added element of better offensive production.

Rick Barnes has brought in six players in 247Sports’ Top 100 transfers list, including Juke Harris (No. 8), Terrence Hill Jr. (No. 19), Jalen Haralson (No. 25), Dai Dai Ames (No. 53), Tyler Lundblade (No. 59), and Miles Rubin (No. 95).

It’ll be up to Tennessee to figure out how to mesh all of those pieces together, but Barnes and his staff have reportedly been very intentional about the way they’ve assembled the roster.

On Monday’s episode of The Field of 68: After Dark, hosts Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman dove into Tennessee’s roster rebuild. Dauster was impressed by the scoring ability that the Vols brought in, while Goodman noted his curiosity as to whether the pieces will come together or not – specifically, with VCU point guard Terrence Hill Jr, who is the second highest-rated incoming Volunteer behind Harris.

“Here’s my question, is like when you’re Terrence Hill coming here, you thought you were probably going to be the guy,” Goodman said. “And now, you’re not. There’s probably no guy, but the guy that probably comes in thinking he’s the guy is Juke Harris, because, you know, he’s thinking he’s an NBA propsect, he’s going to the combine. Now he’s going to end up going to Tennessee and go from where he was the dude at Wake, and every play was called for Juke Harris.”

From previous interviews, though, we know that Hill was fully aware that Tennessee was pursuing Harris. In an interview done with The RTI Low-Down just one day after committing to Tennessee, Hill made his recruiting pitch for Harris to join him on Rocky Top in hopes of competing for a championship together.

“I think I become a big part,” Hill said of Tennessee’s recruiting efforts moving forward in the portal. “Like you said, they already told me about Juke. Obviously, he’s a great player. I think great players want to play with great players. So, seeing my commitment today, hopefully he has Tennessee on his mind and we can kind of reel him in to get this national championship team put together. But, I think I’m a big part (of the recruiting efforts). If I want to be the point guard, I’ve got to be able to lead these guys in recruitment and when the season starts.”

Perhaps that was just providing some positive energy while on a Tennessee-related podcast, but Hill sounded excited about the idea of trying to get Harris and potentially play with him in Knoxville.

It’ll take some time for Tennessee to get all of its pieces working together, but the Vols appear to have put together one of the premier scoring groups in the country. We’ll see how it all works out when the Volunteers hit the court this fall.
