Tennessee softball has won its opening game of the 2026 NCAA Tournament and Knoxville Regional. On Friday evening, the Lady Vols downed Northern Kentucky 3-1 to stay on the winning side of the two-loss elimination bracket.
Here’s what happened.
Emma Clarke, Elsa Morrison Provide Critical Home Runs
Tennessee struck first in the second inning. With one out and nobody on, Emma Clarke lifted a ball to center field for a solo home run. The shot gave the Lady Vols an early 1-0 advantage with Erin Nuwer cruising in the circle.
UT looked poised to make NKU pay further in the inning, as well. Elsa Morrison singled, Taelyn Holley grounded out, Bella Faw walked and Sophia Knight reached on a bunt single to load the bases with two down. However, Gabby Leach flew out to end the inning.
Then, in the bottom of the sixth, after Northern Kentucky had tied up the game in the top of the frame, Morrison struck. She lifted a ball to deep left field that cleared everything and put Tennessee back on top.
To end the game, Clarke finished 1-for-2 with the solo shot and a walk. Morrison ended 2-for-3 with the solo shot and a single.

Erin Nuwer Dominates, Defense Briefly Lets Her Down
Tennessee got a gem in the circle from one of its pitchers that makes up its three-headed monster. Erin Nuwer got the ball and gave little opportunity for Northern Kentucky to get its offense going.
The first base runner of the game didn’t come until the fourth inning when Kenzie Gulley drew a one-out walk. However, Nuwer navigated the first sign of trouble well and retired the following two batters. In the fifth inning, her no-hit bid was broken with a Lexy Morris hit to left-center, but Sophia Knight cut her down at second trying to extend the single to a double. That’d be her only allowed hit of the game.
However, it was the defense behind her that allowed NKU’s lone run. In the top of the sixth, the Norse got their first runner via a fielding error by Emma Clarke at second. Then, a pair of bunts moved her to third with two outs. Nuwer again induced a grounder, this time to third, but Maddi Rutan couldn’t handle it for another fielding error, allowing the run to score.
Nuwer was incredible throughout, though, and looks like she could be hitting her stride at the most important time of the year. She threw the entire game while allowing just one hit, no earned runs and striking out seven batters. It also provides an additional day of rest for Karlyn Pickens and Sage Mardjetko.
Questions Remain at the Plate
There aren’t many questions about what Tennessee has in its pitching staff. Between Erin Nuwer, Karlyn Pickens and Sage Mardjetko, the Lady Vols have arguably the deepest and best staff in the country. The worry is if the bats will show up in this critical stretch of the season.
Against Northern Kentucky, they didn’t for the majority of the game. It was enough to move past the Norse, but it wasn’t an inspiring effort. As a whole, UT went 8-for-26 at the plate in a matchup it likely should’ve dominated. The runs produced were the pair of solo shots from Emma Clarke and Elsa Morrison, and an insurance run double from Gabby Leach.
The most glaring issue was the hitting with runners on base, though. Tennessee stranded nine runners and hit 2-for-13 with runners on. With runners in scoring position, the Lady Vols were just 2-for-9, as well. The hits were a Sophia Knight bunt and Leach’s double.
This will need to change, and in a hurry. If the Lady Vols can’t string together timely hits against the likes of Virginia or Indiana tomorrow, things could get sketchy.
Final Stats
Up Next
Next, Tennessee will play the winner between Virginia and Indiana. The game between the Hoos and Hoosiers is slated for 8 p.m. ET. The matchup between the winners is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday. There is no TV designation announced yet.
The Knoxville Regional is a two-loss elimination bracket. The winner between the Lady Vols and either UVA or IU will then be one win away from advancing to the super regional stage, with two attempts to claim the final win.
