Tennessee Football’s newest commitment in the 2027 recruiting cycle has a direct tie to one of the Vols’ teams in the early 2000s.
According to GoVols247’s Ryan Callahan, Tennessee safety commit Marcus Jones is the nephew of former Vol wide receiver/defensive back Mark Jones, who was with the Volunteers from 2000 to 2003. During his final season with the Vols, Jones racked up 65 rushing yards, 556 receiving yards, and five receiving touchdowns. Jones also fielded 46 punt returns during the 2002 and 2003 seasons, tallying 543 punt return yards and one touchdown.
National Championship winner Phillip Fulmer was Mark Jones’ head coach in Knoxville. Tennessee went 8-4 in 2000, 11-2 in 2001, 8-5 in 2002, and 10-3 in 2003.
According to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, Jones is a four-star prospect in the 2027 recruiting class. He’s also tagged as the No. 262 player in the nation, the No. 22 safety in the cycle, and the No. 9 player from the state of Pennsylvania. He currently plays for The Haverford School in Haverford, PA.
Jones announced his commitment to Tennessee on Friday, becoming the Vols’ 16th pledge in the ’27 class. It’s a strong win for new Tennessee co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter, who is listed as Jones’ primary recruiter. Poindexter was brought onto Tennessee’s staff this offseason on the heels of the Jim Knowles hire.

Jones’ commitment to Tennessee also comes after an official visit to Knoxville on June 12. He also reportedly took visits to Ole Miss (May 29), North Carolina (June 5), and Michigan (June 19), but decided to commit to the Vols on Friday to lock down his spot on Josh Heupel’s roster. Landing Jones is a nice win for Tennessee, especially to cap off a week that saw four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife decommit from the Vols.
Jones adds to a defensive back class that already led the Vols’ group to this point in the cycle. Tennessee now has five defensive backs verbally pledged to the team, including three-star safety Jaden Butler, three-star CB Brandon Leavell, three-star CB Dylan Haley, and three-star CB Carter Jamison. Jones is the highest-ranked amongst the secondary additions.
Tennessee Football’s class currently lands at No. 46 in 247Sports’ team recruiting rankings.
