Tennessee softball was just a win away from advancing to the national title series in the Women’s College World Series for the third time in program history this year. However, the Lady Vols came up short, keeping the hunt for their first national championship alive.

There’s no reason to believe UT won’t continue to be consistently in the mix to win the whole thing, though. Even when star players leave, Karen Weekly has reloaded the roster with strong retention, elite high school recruiting and valuable additions through the transfer portal.

That effort doesn’t seem to have any indication of slowing down, either. To support the belief that Tennessee is capable of staying in position to win a title is a metric released following the conclusion of the season. According to On3, the Lady Vols clocked in as the fifth-most-watched team in the country during the NCAA Tournament.

Ahead of Tennessee in the rankings were Alabama, Texas Tech, Texas and Nebraska. These are all teams that were also in the WCWS and consistently draw big audiences.

Being slotted this high on the list is a product of two things. Of course, playing in big games and lasting longer in the tournament lends itself to drawing more eyes. However, it also means there’s a significant audience for Tennessee softball, which could lead to an increased stream of NIL contributions.

This would then lend itself to continued high-level recruiting from Weekly and her staff. If the group can keep stocking up talent, they’ll stay as a national force.

This upcoming year, Tennessee is already projected as one of the better teams in the country. Even with pitcher Karlyn Pickens out of eligibility and infielder Ella Dodge to the portal, the Lady Vols return All-American pitcher Sage Mardjetko, star pitcher Erin Nuwer and the rest of the starting lineup outside of Dodge. UT also already added star South Carolina infielder transfer Karley Shelton through the portal.
