Tennessee football quarterback George MacIntyre’s number change from 15 to 12 isn’t the only adjustment on the roster for the Vols’ second-year signal caller. He also put on some serious weight under the direction of new strength coach Derek Owings.

After playing at a listed 195 pounds as a true freshman in 2025, he is now listed at 208 pounds. That is a 13-pound increase as he gears up for an important battle for the starting job with Faizon Brandon during fall camp. Out of Franklin, Tennessee, he stands at a towering 6-foot-6, as well.

This 13-pound rise for MacIntyre is an even further improvement since he stepped foot on campus. He previously said he entered college at about 182 pounds. If you take that number, then he’s put on 26 pounds so far.

With the addition of Owings to the staff this offseason, one of the top priorities was beefing up MacIntyre for the season. He was told the goal weight was 210 pounds heading into fall camp, leaving him just a couple of pounds short of the mark.

Still, it’s another early success for Owings to help MacIntyre get toward the target weight with fall camp just under a month away.

“Obviously, nutrition’s going to be a big part of it,” MacIntyre said on the hiring of Owings. “They’re always down there at meals, down there at weigh ins. We weigh in every day, so you really get a gauge of where you’re at or where you need to be. And I think there’s added intensity to every aspect in the weight room, in the training room, in the cafeteria, just added intensity for sure.”

Now, it’ll be a battle between MacIntyre, Brandon and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub for the starting job this year. While MacIntyre is listed at 6-foot-6, 208 pounds, Brandon clocks in at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, and Staub is at 6-foot-1, 204 pounds.
