The SEC will embark on a new path this fall with the new nine-game conference schedule for all 16 teams in the conference. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that each season is going to alternate between having four home games/five road games and five home games/four road games.
Tennessee has the benefit of playing five SEC home games during the first year of the new nine-game format this fall. The Vols will host Texas, Auburn, Alabama, Kentucky, and LSU. It’s undeniably a tremendous home slate for Vol Nation.
But the other wrinkle of the new scheduling format is that each SEC team must play another Power 4 team in the 12-game schedule. For some teams like South Carolina, this is built in with an out-of-conference annual rivalry like Clemson. But other teams, like Tennessee, will need to schedule their way through this new rule.
Tennessee will take on Georgia Tech in Atlanta in Week 2 this season. The Vols will then host the Yellow Jackets in Neyland Stadium in 2027.
One Tennessee fan took to X over the weekend to present an idea to UT Athletic Director Danny White. Their point was that Tennessee should host its non-conference P4 game during the years that only have four SEC home games to “give value to season ticketholders and help the local economy.”
It only took White a few hours to jump onto X and confirm this fan’s idea: “That’s exactly our plan!”

White’s tweet confirms that Tennessee will have five P4 home games every year, whether it be four SEC games and one non-conference game or five SEC games. And it makes all the sense in the world to do it like that. Not just from a local economy and season ticket holder perspective, but also a competitive advantage. Why go out on the road for a non-conference P4 game when you’re already playing five road games in the SEC?
After the Vols’ home-and-home with Georgia Tech in 2026 and 2027, Tennessee will play West Virginia in Charlotte, NC, in the Duke’s Mayo Classic in 2028. The Mountaineers are the designated home team for this contest, and it still works with the five SEC home game slate returning to Tennessee’s side of things that year.
Back in 2022, Tennessee and Washington announced a home-and-home series for the 2029 and 2030 seasons. Tennessee will have the game in Neyland Stadium in 2029, which is a four SEC home games year, and then head to Seattle for the 2030 season, which is a five SEC home games year.
It’s all balanced and strategic to set up Tennessee for the most optimal path in competitiveness, as well as advantageous for both season ticket holders and the local economy.
