Duke left-handed transfer pitcher Mark Hindy committed to Tennessee baseball Wednesday evening over Florida, Florida State, North Carolina and Oklahoma, he announced on his X (Twitter).
Hindy spent his first three collegiate seasons at William & Mary before transferring to Duke for the 2025 season. In his lone season at Duke, Hindy posted a 1-0 record, 4.66 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 29 innings pitched. Opponents hit .224 off of Hindy last season while the left-handed pitcher posted a highly impressive 29.7% strikeout rate and 11.7% walk rate.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound lefty has a four pitch mix that includes a four-seam fastball that sits 90-93 mph as well as a cutter, slider and changeup.
Hindy spent three seasons at William & Mary but was very limited in the first two. Hindy faced just four batters in his freshman season before missing the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He didn’t pitch in the 2023 season (torn labrum) before having a breakout 2024 season.
In his college career, the Essex Fells, New Jersey native has a 27.9% strikeout rate and 11.7% walk rate. He also spent a brief amount of time in the Cape Cod League last summer.
More From RTI: Former Tony Vitello Tennessee Baseball Pitcher Headed Back to MLB All-Star Game
After spending one year in Durham, Hindy entered the transfer portal after Duke coach Chris Pollard left to become the head coach at Virginia. The left-handed pitcher was considering a return to Durham even after entering the portal and didn’t take any visits before deciding Tennessee was the right spot for him.
Tennessee baseball’s pitching staff is in the midst of a major overhaul this offseason with 20 pitchers entering the transfer portal last month and will lose a multitude of other pitchers to the MLB Draft. LHP Dylan Loy was the only major loss with the 19 other outgoing transfers combining to pitch just 7.1 innings in SEC play.
Hindy is the 11th transfer and ninth pitcher to commit to Tennessee this offseason as Tony Vitello and his staff have done a strong job restocking on the mound. The Vols have landed commitments from Virginia LHP Evan Blanco, Rutgers RHP Landon Mack, Rice two-way Blaine Brown, Big South Pitcher of the Year Clay Edmondson (UNC Asheville), SoCon Pitcher of the Year Brady Frederick (ETSU), Kennesaw State’s RHP Bo Rhudy, MIT’s RHP Mason Estrada and Bowling Green two-way star DJ Newman.
While Tennessee has landed commitments from a number of pitchers, they are low on quality left-handed arms. Landing the left-handed pitcher with strong strikeout stuff fills a hole on the Vols’ pitching staff for next season. The Vols also hosted Southern Cal right-handed pitcher transfer Brodie Purcell on a visit early last week.
