Former Tennessee Basketball Standout Kennedy Chandler Quietly Dominated in NBA Summer League

While rookies Jahmai Mashack, Zakai Zeigler and Chaz Lanier, and second-year guard Dalton Knecht took the majority of NBA Summer League headlines for Tennessee, it was another former Vol who had the best collection of games.

Kennedy Chandler, a member of the Houston Rockets’ Summer League team, played in five games and was extremely effective. He finished with an average of 18.2 points per game on 38.8% shooting from the field and 28% on 3-pointers.

His point total was the 24th most of all players in Summer League this season.

Chandler also contributed 4.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. His best outing was a 22-point game that went with seven assists and three steals in a 111-108 loss to the Hawks.

Chandler, a five-star recruit out of Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas and native of Cordova, Tennessee, played just one season with the Vols before going pro. In the 2021-22 season, he took over the role of starting point guard and helped lead UT to an SEC Tournament title. Chandler was MVP of the event.

In 34 games, all of which he started, Chandler averaged 13.9 points per game on 46.4% shooting from the field and 38.3% on 3-pointers. He also averaged 4.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.

Tennessee ultimately fell in the Round of 32 to Michigan after defeating Longwood in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Along with his SEC Tournament MVP nod, Chandler was also named an All-SEC Second-Team and SEC All-Freshman Team member. He was also placed on the CollegeInsider.com Freshman All-America Team.

Chandler was selected No. 38 overall by his home-state Memphis Grizzlies. At the NBA Combine beforehand, he notched the highest max vertical leap among all players at 41.5 inches. In 36 games as a rookie, Chandler averaged 2.2 points and 1.6 assists in 7.8 minutes per game. Since then, he’s participated in the NBA G-League for the Grizzlies, Nets and Raptors affliliates.
