Tennessee baseball transfer commit Tyler Myatt spent most of his summer playing for the Kingsport Axmen and tearing up the Appalachian League. But after a strong stretch in Kingsport, Myatt ended his summer playing for the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod League.

The Cape Cod League is well known as the top collegiate summer league and a wood bat league at that, making life all the more difficult for batters. But wood bats and competition did little to slow down Myatt who slashed .325/.456/.641 with four home runs, four doubles and eight RBIs in just 10 games.

Myatt mostly started as the Firebirds designated hitter and batted in the leadoff spot where he helped spark offense. The left-handed hitter also hit a behemoth 471-foot home run in the Cape Cod League. It longer than any home run a Tennessee player hit during the 2025 season.

The Tazewell, Tennessee native spent his last two seasons playing at Walters State Community College. After redshirting as a freshman, Myatt was a breakout star last season where he earned NJCAA Player of the Year honors.

The utility man put up insane numbers last season for the Senators. In 66 games, Myatt hit .484 with 31 home runs and 110 RBIs. The left-handed hitter broke the Senators’ single-season home run and RBI records. Myatt was a driving force on Walters State’s run to the JUCO World Series finals game.

“I’m a big team guy. I love getting the job done,” Myatt told RTI of his game. “Even if I have to get out doing it, if there needs to be a sac fly, I’m going to figure out how to get it in the air somehow. Or I love being the game changer. If we’re down two and there’s two-on and I’m up to bat, I’m going to take one swing for me and hopefully get it out of the park.”

Myatt committed to Tennessee over LSU and Texas A&M, electing to play for Tony Vitello and his home state team over other SEC powers.

The question for Myatt is what position he will play in Knoxville. A utility man who is capable of playing second base, third base and corner outfield spots, Myatt served as the designated hitter for most of the 2024 season at Walters State Where Myatt plays is uncertain but his bat will make it difficult to keep him out of Tennessee’s lineup in 2025.
