Four-star wing Gage Mayfield is announcing his college commitment Thursday, 247sports Travis Branham first reported Tuesday night. Mayfield is down to a top group that includes Florida State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
Mayfield ranks as a four-star recruit and the No. 63 player in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings. A Moundville native, Mayfield also ranks as the top player in the state of Alabama and the No. 12 power forward in the country in the 2026 recruiting cycle.
The 6-foot-7 wing officially visited Tennessee back in June before taking an August visit to Florida State and visits to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma the last two weeks, respectively. Mayfield announced his commitment date shortly after his visit to Oklahoma.
While Tennessee hosted Mayfield on a visit, they do not seem to be Mayfield’s choice. The Vols have not been pushing super hard for Mayfield’s commitment while they push for other wings and power forwards in the 2026 recruiting cycle. Oklahoma appears to be the favorite with Mayfield’s commitment approaching.
A standout at Hale County High School, Mayfield helped lead the Wildcats to an 18-7 record in his junior season. Since the end of his junior season Mayfield has begun turning head on the AAU circuit leading to Tennessee setting up a visit with the 6-foot-7, 190-pound wing. In just the last few months, Mayfield has earned offer from Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Maryland, Miami and Florida State.
More From RTI: Four-Star Latrell Allmond Talks Official Visit With Tennessee Basketball, Targeting October Commitment
Tennessee has been targeting a number of other wing recruits in the 2026 recruiting cycle. Four-star wing Ralph Scott visited Tennessee over the weekend and the Vols and Houston seem to be the favorites with visits to Purdue and Syracuse remaining this fall.
The Vols will host four-star wing Bo Ogden on a visit this weekend and have official visits scheduled with five-star Bryson Howard and four-star Manny Green scheduled for later this fall.
Rick Barnes and his staff have yet to land a commitment in the 2026 recruiting cycle but are in on a number of highly-touted players and have begun a fall full of official visits. Five-star point guard Miles Sadler officially visited Tennessee two weekends ago before Scott and four-star power forward Latrell Allmond visited the Vols last weekend.
Tennessee also has official visits scheduled with five-star point guard Deron Rippey Jr, Howard, five-star forward Christian Collins Jr, Ogden, Green, four-star shooting guard Jasiah Jervis and four-star power forward Cody Peck for later this fall.
Rippey, Howard, Collins, Jervis and Peck are all currently scheduled to visit Tennessee the weekend of its exhibition matchup against Duke as part of a major recruiting weekend.
