Things continue to get worse for Florida football to open the 2025 season. On the heels of a three-game losing streak to start the year 1-3, the Gators are now dealing with injury news involving their quarterback, DJ Lagway. According to a report from Graham Hall, the sophomore is back in a walking boot.
This comes after Lagway was dealing with an injury during the preseason, as well. He was in a walking boot with a ‘minor leg injury’ before fall camp began in Gainesville. The cause was reportedly due to a calf injury during a team run. It is unclear if this recent development is due to the same ailment.
However, Hall’s report does indicate that there is a belief that Lagway will be good to go for Florida’s next game. UF is off this Saturday, but will play Texas on Oct. 4. That means, unless he suffers further injury, Lagway should then be fine for when he plays Tennessee. The Vols don’t go down to play Florida until Nov. 22.

This isn’t the only injury Lagway has had to deal with, though. During spring training camp, the rising sophomore did not throw any passes as he recovered from a shoulder and lower-body injury.
So far, after the turbulent off-season, Lagway hasn’t lived up to the sky-high expectations that were set for him, either. The former five-star recruit has tossed for just 690 yards and five touchdowns. To make things worse, he’s turned it over with six interceptions, as well, including five in the game against LSU alone.
On the ground, he’s posted just 23 yards on 26 carries and no scores. Overall, his QBR sits at a rough 47.4 rating.
Lagway played in the Gators’ game against Tennessee a year ago as a part of a two-quarterback system. However, in the game, Graham Mertz went down with a season-ending injury, giving the keys full-time to Lagway. He finished the overtime loss to the Vols 9-of-17 through the air with 98 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception.
Tennessee is now looking to take advantage of the nightmare start for Florida at the end of the year. UT gets the Gators for its second-to-last game, meaning the wheels might have fallen completely off for Billy Napier and the program by that point. A win would mark the first in Gainesville for the Vols since 2003.
