Tennessee tight end Ethan Davis is out for the Vols’ SEC road opener against Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon according to the SEC Availability Report.
Davis was a late add to the injury report with the Vols not listing him on the Wednesday night report before adding him as questionable on Thursday night. Tennessee downgraded Davis to out on Friday night as the redshirt sophomore tight end will miss his second straight game.
The Atlanta native is Tennessee’s backup tight end behind Miles Kitselman but has played an extensive number of snaps this season. Davis plays as a backup but the Vols also run a solid amount of 12 personnel, playing two tight ends at the same time.

In three games this season, Davis has caught just one pass for one yard but has proved to be an improved blocker over his first two collegiate seasons.
With Davis sidelined, freshman Jack Van Dorselaer could earn more playing time and a real opportunity. Tennessee could also play freshman DaSaahn Brame but Dorselaer is a better blocker at this point in his career, giving him a higher ceiling.
Tennessee is down a number of players against Mississippi State but most are on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, only freshmen receiver Radarious Jackson, freshmen running back Daune Morris and reserve running back Hunter Barnes are out.
Kickoff between Tennessee and Mississippi State is at 4:15 p.m. ET Saturday afternoon. Dave Neal, Fozzy Whittaker and Morgan Uber are on the call for the SEC Network.
