Former Tennessee wide receiver Squirrel White was involved in a scary moment during Virginia’s field storm at Scott Stadium on Friday night.

With Virginia leading No. 8 Florida State 46-38 in double overtime, the Seminoles had one final chance to score and potentially force a third overtime. Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos targeted former Tennessee wide receiver Squirrel White in the back of the endzone with a deep fourth-down pass, but it was intercepted by the UVA defender to seal the upset for the Cavaliers.

The location of the play and the lack of a crowd-to-field barrier led to an instantaneous field storming from the Virginia student section. White had barely even landed back on the ground before a mass of Cavaliers were sprinting onto the field.

Here’s what it looked like on the game broadcast from ESPN:

Fans quickly turned their attention to the well-being of White, who appeared to be trampled by the oncoming field rush. On Saturday morning, the phrase “FSU WR” was trending on X due to the significant reaction it had received overnight.

Fortunately, videos soon popped up of White walking around and off the field.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell was asked after the game if any of his players got hurt during the field storm:

“I’m not sure of any issues,” Norvell said. “We’ve got everybody in the locker room.”

Social media was going crazy talking about the former Volunteer, though. The situation sparked debate amongst fans online, whether the field storming needs to be altered, changed, or outright eliminated.

Virginia’s stadium made for a unique situation. The section behind the endzone, a grass hill, is where students can pile up to watch the game. There’s no wall to climb over or barricade to slow things down. As seen in the video, it’s a straight shot onto the field. That’s not normal, but it certainly did lead to the speed at which UVA’s students hit the playing surface.

Squirrel White finished the game with two catches for five yards, bringing his season total to four receptions for 52 yards. His best game came against Alabama in the season opener, where he caught one reception for 40 yards. He has yet to find the endzone.

White transferred to FSU after spending his first three seasons under Josh Heupel at Tennessee. White’s career-best season came in 2023, when he caught 67 receptions for 803 yards and two touchdowns. In his final season in Knoxville, White caught 34 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns.
