It doesn’t take an expert to see Chris Brazzell’s stats and see the remarkable season he has begun to put together. The Tennessee football receiver leads FBS college football in receiving touchdowns and the SEC in yards, catches and 10+ yard receptions through five games.
The result has been some darkhorse Heisman Trophy buzz alongside his quarterback, Joey Aguilar. While the Heisman may be a long shot since it more often than not goes to a quarterback, the Biletnikoff Award may be realistically in reach. He’d be the second Vol to win the award, joining Jalin Hyatt, who did so in 2022.
Hyatt’s 2022 season is considered debatably the best by a receiver in program history. It is, at the very least, unarguably in the discussion. So, how does the start to Brazzell’s season stack up to Hyatt’s from just a few years back? You may be surprised that Brazzell tops Hyatt’s marks in catches, yards and touchdowns so far.
The competition is pretty comparable, too. In both 2022 and 2025, through five games, UT had faced two weaker opponents (’22 had two MAC teams while ’25 had ETSU and UAB), an away-from-home ACC squad, a home SEC game and an away SEC game against a team formerly in the West division.
