Tennessee baseball began its second week of fall practice scrimmages Tuesday afternoon with the Vols holding an eight inning scrimmage where a number of top pitchers got work before the Vols’ Saturday intrasquad scrimmage in Chattanooga.
It was my first chance to watch the Vols this fall. As always, it will take some time to get to know all the new faces but a number of them were impressive on a day where five different Tennessee batters went deep including Virginia transfer Henry Ford and freshman Taylor Tracey who went deep and doubled.
The most notable at-bat of the day came when sophomore Jay Abernathy took Rice two-way transfer Blaine Brown deep. It was a lefty-lefty no doubter to right-center field.
Freshman Hutson Chance doubled twice and Blaine Brown recorded a pair of hits at the plate. Freshman Trent Grindlinger reached base safely in all three of his plate appearances Blake Grimmer also had a nice day at the plate with two hits and a three-run homer off the batter’s eye.
On the pitching side, I thought Rutgers transfer RHP Landon Mack was better than the numbers looked. He gave up four hits but two were seeing-eye singles and another was a softly hit infield single. Certainly a good bit of bad luck involved in his rough afternoon.
The same can be said of Kennesaw Star transfer Bo Rhudy who looked dominant in his first inning pitched before a throwing error, walk and the previously mentioned Grimmer home run derailed his second inning.
Duke transfer LHP Mark Hindy and freshman LHP Cameron Appenzeller probably had the two best days statistically. Hindy is a much more physical presence then I was expecting. Came away really impressed by him. Perhaps my biggest takeaway of the afternoon.
Speaking of physically put together, freshman infielder Ethan Moore is not built like a freshman. He’s an absolute tank. He had an infield hit on the afternoon.
It’s important to note that this was not a super formal scrimmage. Pitchers are on pitch counts, and each pitcher has designated innings to throw. That meant that some didn’t finish their inning due to hitting their pitch count. With that, it’s on to the stats.
