The stakes for last Saturday’s game between Tennessee and Mississippi State weren’t just high for the SEC standings, but also for the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback room.
Former Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott and VFL Joe Milton III look to have made a bet for the game between their former collegiate programs, with the loser having to show up in the winner’s jersey for their road trip to New Jersey this weekend.
Milton won the bet with Tennessee’s overtime victory, meaning Prescott had to pay up and put on the No. 7 orange jersey on Saturday:

The Cowboys acquired Milton in the offseason to be the backup for Prescott this season. Reports throughout the offseason and the early stretch of the season suggest that the two have become good friends on and off the field with golf games to pregame rituals. It’s not surprising that the friendship ended up with a public bet payoff with their collegiate programs.
Milton was close to wearing the Prescott jersey, though. Tennessee reached down deep and pulled out an overtime win over Mississippi State last Saturday in Starkville, thanks to a DeSean Bishop bonus time touchdown run and a key fourth-down stop by the Vols’ defense.
Prescott played four seasons at Mississippi State from 2012 to 2015. He played in 49 games for the Bulldogs and ended his collegiate career with 9,376 passing yards, 70 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. He was taken in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by Jerry Jones’ Cowboys.
Joe Milton transferred to Tennessee from Michigan at the start of Josh Heupel’s tenure in Knoxville in 2021. He was the Vols’ full-time starter during the 2023 season and led Tennessee to the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl during his final season in Knoxville. Milton threw for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions during the 2023 season with the Vols.
Milton was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He spent one season with the Patriots before being traded to the Cowboys this past offseason.
Prescott and Milton’s Cowboys are 1-2-1 so far this season.
