Tennessee Football pulled off a shocking move on early signing day by re-flipping four-star athlete Legend Bey on Wednesday afternoon. The quarterback/wide receiver hybrid prospect originally committed to Tennessee in late June, but flipped his commitment to Ohio State on Nov. 10 after a strong push from the Buckeyes.

Then, in a surprising turn, Bey re-flipped his commitment back to the Volunteers on Wednesday. He officially signed with Tennessee in the afternoon and helped boost an already Top 10-ranked recruiting class for head coach Josh Heupel.

Bey’s signing happened just minutes before Heupel’s signing day press conference on Wednesday afternoon. With how surprising the news was, Bey was the first player asked about to Heupel. The veteran Tennessee coach raved about the skill set that the 5-foot-10.5 prospect brings to the table.

“Yeah, Legend, on the video, he is dynamic,” Heupel said on Wednesday. “Special playmaker, ball in his hands. Got a chance to watch him live and in person, too. And he is such a unique tool. His skill set, having played quarterback, the command, the presence that he has back there. Throws the ball really extremely well in person. As a playmaker, man, the ability to be involved out in space, perimeter screen, the ability to go up and high point balls, he’s extremely loose. He’s a guy that can be used in the return game as well. So just a dynamic tool that we have an opportunity to add to the offensive arsenal.”

As Heupel mentioned, Bey is a versatile prospect on the offensive side of the ball. He’s listed as a quarterback on 247Sports’ recruiting site and as an athlete on On3’s recruiting site, but has wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope as his primary recruiter for Tennessee.

Heupel credits Pope as one of the biggest factors in being able to keep Tennessee in the fight despite the previous flip to Ohio State in November.

“Early on our personnel department, researching (Bey), and then Kelsey got a chance to watch him really early in the process,” Heupel said. “We got on him extremely early and I think that’s one of the keys of ultimately getting him. Kelsey did a great job developing a relationship with Legend, his family. They had a great experience up here, and through the stretch run right here, we were hoping to get some good news. And Kelsey certainly did a great job of flipping him back.”

According to 247Sports, Bey was a dynamic two-sport athlete in both football and track. He played both sports for multiple schools during his high school career, but the results were still the same. He was a standout athlete both on the track and the gridiron, and Tennessee will be looking to capitalize on that athleticism once he arrives on campus.

“Dynamic high school quarterback who projects as a playmaking skill weapon,” 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks wrote about Bey in a November evaluation. “Potential high-major offensive threat who could foster personnel creativity and big-play juice.”
