The Rocky Top Insider team expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of our colleague Wes Rucker, who tragically passed away Thursday afternoon.

Wes was an award-winning and iconic member of the Tennessee athletics beat, spending over two decades covering the Vols. A University of Tennessee graduate, Wes covered his alma mater for The Daily Beacon, Chattanooga Times Free Press, 247sports and WBIR in his highly-successful career.

A talented writer, Wes had an incredible ability to find unique angles and tell stories in a distinct way with a defined voice. His questioning and storytelling were a constant for anyone who followed Tennessee sports.

In addition to his talent, Wes was a kind man who would talk with anyone about not only the Vols but a myriad of interests that they might share, especially the Chicago Cubs and Arsenal F.C.

A man of great culture, Wes was always excited to talk about music, TV shows, movies and everything in between. Whether it was asking who sang a song playing over a stadium’s speakers or sharing how season two of The Wire is better than people think (he would go to battle over that), Wes could and would talk about anything.

Wes made a particular impact on student writers. It can be difficult for students to spark up conversation with professionals when new to covering games. But not with Wes.

Wes treated everyone with the utmost respect and kindness, and he was always willing to help others.

In 2022, RTI’s own Jack Foster was a student journalist covering the Tennessee baseball team. Jack only knew Wes for a few months at this point as they both covered the Vols. In conversation, Jack mentioned to Wes during a midweek game that he did not yet have a place to stay for the upcoming Knoxville Regional.

Jack had no worry of finding a place to stay and was not asking for help. But without hesitation, Wes offered his home as a place Jack was welcome to stay. Despite a newborn baby at home, Wes did not think twice about helping a young reporter he casually knew. Wes’ kindness was unmatched and made a major impact on Jack and so many of his other colleagues.

The Vol sports beat will greatly miss Wes as will so many others who knew him or read his work. The thoughts and prayers of the RTI team are with all who knew Wes and particularly his family and loved ones.
