It’s been nearly two decades since Lane Kiffin spent his lone year as Tennessee football’s head coach, but he still finds a way to make headlines in Knoxville. On Friday, after Joey Aguilar was denied his request for a preliminary injunction to grant him an additional year of eligibility, Kiffin weighed in.
On his X account, Kiffin posted in response to the Aguilar news: “When you don’t get (Tom Mars) involved …….”
He ended the post with an emoji of the flag of the country of Trinidad and Tobago, a commonly used reference to his former Ole Miss quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss was represented by Mars in his eligibility case, which he won.
However, the cases between Aguilar and Chambliss were very different. Aguilar was arguing against the NCAA’s rules that count time spent at the junior college level against a player’s eligibility. Chambliss was arguing that he should have this extra year due to a mishandled medical redshirt waiver.

Kiffin is no longer at Ole Miss, though, and Chambliss isn’t following him to LSU, either. Instead, Pete Golding is taking over the Rebels’ program. Golding also coached the team to College Football Playoff wins over Tulane and Georgia before narrowly falling to Miami in the wake of Kiffin’s departure.
Kiffin’s unprompted trolling of Aguilar wasn’t the only social media drama the 50-year-old head coach found himself in on Friday, either. He also tagged Ole Miss women’s basketball coach Yolett ‘Coach Yo’ McPhee-McCuin in posts before and after the LSU team beat the Rebels in Oxford.
McPhee-McCuin retorted by posting: “Have y’all ever heard of a football coach, tagging a WBB coach, after a game? This guy doesn’t even like women’s sports! Cope harder!” She also added a Trinidad and Tobago flag and #GoldingEra.
McPhee-McCuin later went on to post a video of her striking Kiffin out at an Ole Miss celebrity slowpitch softball game, as well.
Kiffin responded to McPhee-McCuin by posting that he loves women’s sports with a photo of him with LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey and another of him holding a softball. He also separately posted a clapping emoji and ‘the change you have brought to (Ole Miss women’s basketball) is amazing!!! I remember the first year. You have built it into a premier program in the country!!!”
