Tennessee Basketball picked up its 20th win of the season in a physical battle on Saturday afternoon. The Vols defeated No. 19 Vanderbilt by a score of 69-65 in an in-state rivalry bout from Nashville.

Tennessee guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the way with 17 points, while star freshman Nate Ament had 13 points and nine rebounds. But the story of the game was how Tennessee’s platoon of role players stepped up in a massive way. Bishop Boswell was an instrumental defensive piece to the game and still picked up nine points, while DeWayne Brown had eight points in a near-season-high 30 minutes on the court. The Vols also got some big moments from Amari Evans, Ethan Burg, and Jaylen Carey against his former team.

After starting the SEC slate with two wins and three losses, Tennessee has now rattled off eight wins in its last nine games. The Vols are quietly putting things together at the right time while flying under the national radar as an unranked team. Tennessee will stay on the road this week with a Tuesday night game at Missouri.

Following the game, Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes and Vanderbilt head coach Mark Byington met with the media to discuss their thoughts on the contest. Tennessee also had guard Bishop Boswell and center DeWayne Brown answer questions as well.
