Tennessee Football has had an eventful offseason both on and off the field. On one hand, the Vols have re-shaped their defensive coaching staff and strength room with hirings such as Jim Knowles, Anthony Poindexter, Derek Owings, and others. On the other hand, though, Tennessee made a point to add to its Top 10 recruiting class with a handful of players from the transfer portal. We’ll have a chance to see those players on the field for the first time during spring camp next month, but there’s certainly a lot of intrigue in how Tennessee will fix its defensive challenges from last season.
With the SEC moving to a nine-game conference slate in 2026, the Vols will have several marquee opponents and matchups on their hands this fall. Tennessee’s got its familiar faces on the schedule, such as Alabama and Vanderbilt, but also lesser-seen opponents with Auburn and Texas.
The game against the Longhorns will take place in Knoxville in the fourth week of the season on Sept. 26. It’ll be both teams’ SEC opening contest of the new nine-game conference schedule. That’s also the game that ESPN’s staff has penciled in as Tennessee’s season-defining game in 2026.
“For one, it’s the Vols’ SEC opener,” ESPN’s Dave Wilson writes. “Second, it’s Texas’ first-ever trip to Knoxville, and fans are going to be riled up for ‘The REAL UT’ debate. This is a classic ‘measuring stick’ game. The Vols are breaking in a new quarterback with Joey Aguilar’s legal attempts to gain another year being denied, and the much-maligned defense will get a makeover with longtime DC Jim Knowles taking over. Taking on Texas’ retooled offense around Arch Manning will show if the defense is ready to help Tennessee bounce back.”

The idea of the season-defining game is obviously a fickle one, considering that it could be fluid depending on how the wins and losses shape out throughout the season. But the Texas game is a good pick here for the magnitude of the matchup and the fact that the Vols have the Longhorns in Neyland Stadium. It’s hard to think that Texas won’t be the favorite on the road in this one, but there’s a lot of time between now and then.
While it doesn’t have the same pizzazz as Tennessee vs Texas on paper, you could also look at Tennessee’s Week 2 matchup at Georgia Tech as a huge early-season game. With it only being the second week of the season, there’s obviously still a lot of games left for things to play out. But it will also be the Vols’ first real test for their new quarterback and new defense to perform in a fairly intriguing non-conference game. The Georgia Tech road game might not define Tennessee’s season, but it will be the first true benchmark of where the Vols are in 2026.
