Former Tennessee assistant coach Kim English looks to be out as Providence Basketball’s head coach moving forward. According to a report by basketball insider Adam Zagoria on Wednesday, Providence informed English “about a week ago” that he will not be returning as the Friars’ head coach next season. The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman also reported on Thursday that English will not be back with Providence next season.
English was an assistant coach at Tennessee from 2019 to 2021. He then left Knoxville to take his first head coaching role at George Mason from 2021 to 2023, until he was hired away by Providence before the 2023-2024 season. English spent three seasons with the Friars, including the 2025-2025 campaign.
During his two seasons in Knoxville, English helped mold some of Tennessee’s most recognizable players in the Rick Barnes era, including Lamonte Turner, Josiah-Jordan James, Jordan Bowden, Santiago Vescovi, John Fulkerson, Keon Johnson, and Jaden Springer.

English went 34-29 during his two seasons at George Mason before taking the Providence job. He led his team to a 20-13 record during the 2022-2023 season.
In three years with Providence, English coached the Friars to a 42-50 overall record. The team went 21-14 in his first year, 12-20 in his second year, and is 14-16 this season. Providence’s regular-season finale will come this Saturday night in a road game at Georgetown.
Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Basketball program will also play its regular-season finale this weekend. The Vols will host in-state rival Vanderbilt in the final game before the SEC Tournament at 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in Knoxville, TN.
