Tennessee Basketball advanced to the Sweet 16 with a victory over 3-seed Virginia on Sunday night in Philadelphia. The Vols defeated the Cavaliers by a score of 79-72 to move to 2-0 on the weekend. Tennessee previously clobbered Miami (OH) on Friday night to get to Sunday’s game against the Cavs.
The Vols will now prepare for a Sweet 16 game against 2-seed Iowa State next Friday in Chicago, IL.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the Vols with 21 points on the night, upping his tournament total to 50 points through two games. But what really stood out on Sunday was how Tennessee’s role players helped the cause. Bishop Boswell had three key three-pointers in the first 16 minutes, JP Estrella and Jaylen Carey combined for 20 points, and Felix Okpara pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. It was a balanced, team-driven game from Tennessee that got the Vols to the finish line.
