It didn’t take long for former Lady Vols basketball assistant coach Gabe Lazo to find his new job. After resigning from Tennessee on Friday, Lazo was announced as an assistant at LSU on Kim Mulkey’s staff on Tuesday.
“Gabe will be an outstanding addition to our staff,” Mulkey said. “He has been an invaluable member of two SEC staffs with an unbelievable ability to teach the game and recruit the best players in the country. Gabe will impact our program at the highest level, and his unmatched work ethic will lead to great results on the court and on the recruiting trail. It doesn’t matter if Gabe is out recruiting or coaching on the floor because the contributions he will make toward our program will be significant.”
Lazo just wrapped up his second season as an assistant coach under Kim Caldwell at Tennessee. He was hired from the staff at Mississippi State, bringing needed SEC experience to Caldwell’s inaugural staff.
UT has since hired Bill Ferrara, Florida State’s associate head coach, as Lazo’s replacement.
More From RTI: What Rick Barnes Believes Tennessee Basketball Needs To Break Through
Lazo was the primary recruiter for all five high school signees and three transfer portal prospects that Tennessee signed last cycle. He was also the primary recruiter for UT’s pair of high school signees in the 2026 class, Oliviyah Edwards and Gabby Minus.
While Lazo has proven to be an elite recruiter, he prides himself on much more than just that. He also plays a big hand in the X’s and O’s that go into preparing for games. Lazo told RTI before this past season that he has aspirations to be a head coach, as well.
“He’s intense,” former Lady Vols forward Alyssa Latham told RTI before the season. “If you’re not going to play hard, go home. If you’re not gonna play hard, not gonna talk or try or do your best, don’t even bother. The energy he brings has been great. You’ll know if Gabe’s not in the building. If Gabe’s not here, you’ll know. Having someone like that that brings that kind of energy is great.”
