VFL Trey Smith knows a thing or two about staying in the Volunteer State and playing for the Tennessee Volunteers. The Jackson, TN, native spent four years at UT from 2017 to 2020 and racked up numerous career accolades while becoming one of the most beloved Vols of the modern era.
Now, he’s hoping another in-state prospect makes the same decision.
The talk around the Tennessee recruiting world currently revolves around five-star running back David Gabriel Georges from Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN. The elite prospect was in Knoxville over the weekend for his official visit, and the Vols brought out legendary VFL Alvin Kamara to hang out with him on Rocky Top. Tennessee also had him put on the Dark Mode uniform to pose in front of his friends and family.
Smith took the video on Twitter and commented: “@DavidGG27 It means more to come home brother!”

247Sports’ Composite Rankings have Gabriel Georges tagged as a five-star prospect, the No. 10 player in the class, the No. 2 running back in the cycle, and the No. 1 player from the Volunteer State. He’s an impressive prospect who can make an impact at the next level, whether it be at the highest levels of the SEC or the Big Ten.
Gabriel Georges is currently deciding between Tennessee, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and Georgia. He took an official visit to Ohio State last weekend and was at Tennessee this weekend. He’ll then visit Ole Miss and Georgia over the next two weeks, before supposedly making his official decision at the end of the month.
Ohio State seemingly picked up momentum coming out of his visit to Columbus, with two Rivals insiders logging OSU predictions before his visit to Knoxville. But the Volunteers seemingly pulled out all the stops for DGG on Friday.
Last month, Gabriel Georges posted a clip of himself running a 40-yard dash, which had a laser clock-in time at 4.38 seconds.
To put that number in perspective, it would’ve been tied for the 20th-best 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine this past March. It would also have been the fourth-best time among running backs at the combine, trailing only Mike Washington’s 4.33, Jeremiyah Love’s 4.36, and Demond Clairborne’s 4.37. The time is 0.11 seconds faster than Jadarian Price, who went as the final pick in the first round last month.
Tennessee currently has 10 commitments in the 2027 cycle, which ranks 30th in Rivals’ 2027 team rankings. The Vols’ class features four-star WR Kesean Bowman, four-star OT Princeton Uwaifo, four-star tight end Malik Howard, four-star DL Kadin Fife, three-star safety Jaden Butler, three-star linebacker J.P. Peace, three-star quarterback Derrick Baker, three-star CB Slim Leavell, three-star CB Carter Jamison, and longsnapper Sam McKeown.
