Two current and one former Tennessee golfer teed it up at Shinnecock Hills Golf Course on Long Island Thursday for the opening day of the 126th US Open. How did they fare? Very similar.
Jackson Herrington, Chase Kyes and Caleb Surratt all shot a 5-over-par 75 on the opening day of the tournament.
Herrington jumped out to a strong start. Teeing off on the back nine, Herrington was 1-over-par through 13 holes and in the top 25 on the leaderboard before scuffling down the stretch and making bogey on four of the final five holes. Similarly to Herrington, Kyes was 1-over-par at the turn before playing the final six holes four-over-par.
Surratt was 3-over-par at the turn, made a birdie on the par three 11th and then made bogeys on hole 13, 14 and 16 before parring out.

The trio are tied for 113th place in the field of 156 players. The top 60, and any players tied in the top 60, make the cut and play the remainder of the weekend. The cut is currently at 2-over par meaning all three have work to do to make the cut.
The seemingly good news is that all three played in the morning on Thursday and Shinnecock Hills played easier in the afternoon on Thursday.
The first round is also not complete. Fog delayed round one by two hours on Thursday morning and not every player completed their opening rounds on Thursday.
Herrington qualified for the 126th US Open by finishing second at last summer’s US Amateur at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Kyes earned his invite to the US Open through local qualifying. The Birmingham native shot 11-under-par in two rounds of qualifying at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Georgia earlier this month. The professional Surratt earned a spot in the US Open by shooting 3-under-par over 36 holes at the Dallas Athletic Club.
Surratt’s tee time is at 12:30 p.m. ET on Friday while Herrington’s is at 12:41 p.m. ET and Kyes’ is at 12:52 p.m. ET.
