Expectations are sky high for Braylon Staley in his third year with Tennessee football. As a redshirt-freshman a season ago, Staley broke out as the Vols’ starter in the slot and won SEC Freshman of the Year. Now, he’s projected to carry a significant load in the pass game with the departure of Chris Brazzell.
Given his production from 2025 and outlook for 2026, many consider Staley a preseason All-SEC candidate and one of the best pass catchers in the sport. However, in a list of top 10 receivers made by On3’s Ari Wasserman, he was nowhere to be found.
In response, Staley’s dad clapped back in the replies.
“Again!! I’m glad this is just a thought!!” Brian Staley wrote. “I’ve seen them eat their own words many times!! All I can say is, bon appétit!!”

More From RTI: “Due for a Breakout Year”: Former Vol Speaks Highly on Tennessee Football Defensive Lineman
In 2025, Braylon Staley posted 68 receptions for 837 yards and six touchdowns. This was the second most on the team behind Brazzell.
As a freshman, he earned a redshirt in limited action, but did see run in the College Football Playoffs first round loss at Ohio State. On the year, he caught three passes for 21 yards. He is from Johnston, South Carolina, where he was an extremely highly rated recruit. 247 considered him a four-star and the No. 78 player in the class of 2024.
Now, he’s returning as the unquestioned starter in the slot for UT. He’ll be joined by Mike Matthews on the outside, with the other outside spot up for grabs between Travis Smith Jr., Radarious Jackson and five-star freshman TK Keys. Behind him in the slot features Joakim Dodson, Tyreek King and Ian Duarte.
