
Tennessee baseball transfer right-handed pitcher Sawyer Deering committed to San Diego State on Friday morning, he announced on his X (Twitter).
Deering made 10 appearances in his freshman season at Tennessee, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 6.2 innings pitched. He struck out five batters while walking three batters. The right-handed pitcher made two appearances in SEC play, allowing two earned runs in one inning pitched.
A Kimberly, Kansas native, Deering was the No. 356 player and No. 108 right-handed pitcher in the 2025 recruiting cycle according to Perfect Game.
Deering joins a San Diego State program that has had some traditional success but not nearly as much as many of its west coast counterparts. The Aztecs have made the NCAA Tournament 14 times in program history, most recently in 2017 and 2018.

San Diego State posted a 36-24 (16-8 Mountain West) record during the 2026 season. Deering transfers to San Diego State a year after Aztecs infielder Finley Bates transferred to Tennessee.
Sixteen Tennessee players have entered the transfer portal this offseason including infielder Ethan Moore, first baseman Evan Hankins, right-handed pitcher Nic Abraham, outfielder Nate Eisfelder, shortstop Manny Marin, utility man Jay Abernathy, catcher Cash Williams, infielder Finley Bates, shortstop Ariel Antigua, utility man Hunter High, utility man Chris Newstrom, outfielder Hutson Chance, right-handed pitcher Brayden Krenzel, two-way Taylor Tracey, right-handed pitcher Sawyer Deering and right-handed pitcher Ari Bethea.
The Vols have landed three transfers to date including Air Force infielder Wyatt Hanoian, Mercer two-way Braydon Kersey and Northwestern State left-handed pitcher Brody Trosclair.
A number of Tennessee players have announced intentions to return for next season including outfielder Blaine Brown, RHP Landon Mack, LHP Cam Appenzeller, first baseman Levi Clark, catcher Trent Grindlinger, catcher Stone Lawless and LHP Will Haas.
