A former Tennessee Volunteer and Knoxville native is getting a shot at the next level.
According to a report from The Field of 68’s Vince Wolfram on Thursday, SMU guard BJ Edwards has signed an Exhibit-10 contract with the Sacramento Kings after going undrafted in the 2026 NBA Draft.
An Exhibit-10 contract is a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum salary agreement, allowing teams to work out select players during training camp while maintaining their G-League rights. This contract can convert into a two-way contract before the season, allowing the player to move back and forth between the NBA and the G-League.
Edwards, a graduate of Knoxville Catholic, played in 14 games during his lone season with the Volunteers in 2022-2023. He scored 17 total points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a 2-of-5 mark from the three-point line. Edwards also added eight total rebounds, six assists, one block, and one steal during that stretch.
He then transferred to the Lone Star State to play for SMU, where he has been for the last three seasons. After averaging 1.2 points per game during his season with Tennessee, Edwards averaged 3.7 PPG during his first season with SMU, 9.9 PPG during his second season with the Mustangs, and 12.7 PPG during his most recent season.

Edwards started all 28 games that he played in for SMU this season, averaging 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. All three of those statistics are career highs for the 6-foot-3 guard. His season was ultimately cut short due to an ankle injury that he suffered in late February.
SMU made its way into the play-in round of the NCAA Tournament this past spring, but lost to Miami (OH) in the First Four. Edwards was ruled out for that game despite some speculation that he could potentially return. If SMU had won that game, the Mustangs would’ve moved on to play Tennessee in the opening week of the tournament from Philadelphia.
“BJ was always a good player,” Former Tennessee associate head coach Justin Gainey said before the tournament. “When he was here, we really loved him. We didn’t want to see him go. (We) understood his decision, but always saw the vision and the potential that he had. And it’s awesome to see him kind of living that out and doing what he does. And just excited for him, excited for his family, and wish him and hope he gets healthy.”
Tennessee had three players selected in the NBA Draft this week, with Nate Ament going 13th to the Milwaukee Bucks, Ja’Kobi Gillespie going 42nd to the San Antonio Spurs, and Felix Okpara going 46th to the Washington Wizards. The Vols also saw former Vol Cameron Carr drafted 24th overall to the Los Angeles Lakers, while former Vol Tobe Awaka signed a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls.
