ESPN unveiled new Top 300 player rankings for the 2027 recruiting cycle this past week, with four Tennessee commits landing on the list. That number could rise in the coming weeks, but we’ll get to that at the end.
The highest-ranked Tennessee player on ESPN’s rankings is four-star WR Kesean Bowman, who lands at the No. 39 spot. Bowman, an in-state prospect, is a 6-foot-1 receiver from Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, TN. He’s been committed to Tennessee since late March and projects as a talented receiver in SEC competition. On all major recruiting platforms, Bowman is the top guy in UT’s class so far.
Sticking with the Brentwood Academy theme, one of Bowman’s teammates is also on the list. Four-star linebacker Kenneth Simon II ranks as the No. 184 player in the class. Bowman shocked the recruiting world by flipping from Alabama to Tennessee earlier in the month, simultaneously giving the Vols a major win on the recruiting trail and taking a skilled player from a direct rival. Simon is also a legacy commit as the son of former Tennessee linebacker standout Kevin Simon.
Sandwiched between Bowman and Simon on the list is local tight end Malik Howard, who comes in at No. 162 in the rankings. Howard is a four-star prospect from Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, TN, so he won’t have to travel very far to play his college ball next season. The 6-foot-4 tight end is a versatile threat in the passing game and gives Tennessee a nice piece to work with down the road. Keeping Howard close to home was a strong win for the Vols.
The final Tennessee commit on the list is four-star offensive tackle Princeton Uwaifo, another in-state prospect that Tennessee was able to keep in the state’s borders. The 6-foot-6 lineman is ranked as the No. 257 player in the rankings and is a very talented lineman. Uwaifo was one of Tennessee’s earliest commitments in the cycle and has remained strong in his pledge to the Vols. He was recently in Knoxville for an official visit, and promptly shut down his recruitment after the trip to Rocky Top.

It’s a pretty safe bet that all of these players are going to pan out at Tennessee to some degree down the road, assuming all four keep their commitment and sign with the Vols this December. But it’s also four important in-state recruiting wins for Josh Heupel and his staff, especially considering the rise of in-state rival Vanderbilt and the natural nearby competition in the SEC.
The final piece to mention here also revolves around a key in-state player that Tennessee is looking to keep close to home. Elite 2027 running back target David Gabriel Georges ranks as the No. 14 overall player in the class, and Tennessee is in an all-out fight to land a commitment from him this summer. Gabriel Georges is an uber-talented player and would more than hold his own in SEC play. He’s an offense-changing player, and could make a quick and decisive impact with the Vols if he so chooses. Tennessee and Ohio State have been widely looked at as the two major players in the race, but he also recently took an official visit to Ole Miss, too.
ESPN does not have a class ranking for Tennessee as a whole, but Rivals lists UT at No. 32 in the nation and 247Sports has the Vols at No. 46.
