Tennessee Football made a huge splash in the 2027 recruiting cycle with a commitment from elite running back David Gabriel Georges on Wednesday evening. The commitment gives Tennessee its first five-star prospect of the cycle and an ultra-talented player for the 2027 season. 247Sports’ Composite Rankings tags Gabriel Georges as the No. 10 player in the class, the No. 2 running back, and the No. 1 player from the Volunteer State.
Gabriel Georges’ commitment gave Tennessee the five-star gem that it had previously been missing. The Vols do have a handful of Top 300 players, including four-star wide receiver Kesean Bowman and four-star LB Kenneth Simon, but it was previously missing the Top 15 prospect that it had grabbed in the prior four cycles. “This could prove to be Josh Heupel’s lowest-ranked class at Tennessee,” ESPN’s Eli Lederman wrote on Friday. “But the sixth-year coach landed one of the most significant commitments of his Vols tenure Wednesday with a pledge from No. 2 running back David Gabriel Georges, ESPN’s No. 14 overall recruit.”
With the commitment, Tennessee bumped up to No. 24 in ESPN’s 2027 team rankings. In doing so, Josh Heupel’s Vols knocked Eli Drinkwitz’s Missouri Tigers out of the Top 25. There’s still a ton of time to go in the class for things to stay the same or change, but Tennessee fans often love to see any sort of advantage over Drinkwitz.
ESPN has Tennessee with six commitments from the SC Next 300: RB David Gabriel Georges (13), WR Kesean Bowman (38), TE Malik Howard (161), LB Kenneth Simon II (183), OT Princeton Uwaifo (256), and OT Niko Kampas (280).

“Josh Heupel is working off the principle that good recruiting starts at home, as the foundation of the Volunteers’ class is built with top talent from within the state of Tennessee,” ESPN’s Craig Haubert writes. “Included in that group are the top two offensive playmakers within its borders: WR Kesean Bowman and RB David Gabriel Georges. The Volunteers scored a big recruiting win over Ohio State in keeping the five-star Gabriel Georges at home; he brings the potential for immediate impact.”
The Vols’ highest-rated defensive commit, according to ESPN, is linebacker Kenneth Simon II. He is the son of former Tennessee linebacker Kevin Simon. Tennessee flipped Simon from his previous Alabama commitment back in mid-June. The Vols also have a connection to the past with LB commit J.P. Peace, who is the son of former Tennessee linebacker Robert Peace and the grandson of Phillip Fulmer.
“(The Vols) have mined some in-state talent on defense, as well,” Haubert writes. “LB Kenneth Simon, out of a loaded Brentwood Academy program, is a defender with good range and can be effective in coverage. And LB J.P. Peace, a local prospect from the Knoxville area, is big and can be an aggressive, physical presence but also runs well for his size.”
In addition to jumping Tennessee up to the Top 25 of the team rankings, ESPN also put the Vols’ 2027 class into a specific recruiting tier. Tennessee lands on the third tier of teams around the nation, titled ‘Perennial Powers (Mostly) on Schedule.’ The Vols sit alongside Michigan, Miami, Georgia, and LSU on that tier.
Tennessee Football currently has 18 commitments in the 2027 class, which ranks No. 24 on 247Sports’ team rankings and No. 24 on Rivals’ team rankings.
