Sunday Night Football Preview: Ravens Favored by 2.5 Points Over Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens, Jan. 1, 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC

The Ravens have secured a playoff spot, but that’s not enough for those greedy, poetic birds. Wins in their last two games and a loss by Cincinnati would equal a division title, and lift Baltimore to the No. 3 seed and a home playoff game in the first round.

Stuff to play for, wouldn’t you say?

Still, according to FanDuel, Baltimore is only favored by 2.5 points at home against a Steelers team that has as much trouble scoring points as Elon Musk does suspending Twitter accounts.

In 10 of his 15 previous seasons, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has led his team to the NFL Playoffs. That seems unlikely this season, as the Steelers need to leapfrog six teams to make the postseason tournament. The prospect of their first losing season since 2003 is not a warm thought for Pittsburgh fans, but the fact the franchise hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016 stings even more.

Most troubling, the Steelers made Kenny Pickett the first quarterback selected in last year’s draft and gave him the chance to show he’s their future. But in 11 starts, Pickett, who some experts compared to Derek Carr, has thrown for five TDs against nine picks. If he’s the future, that future is undetermined, and the post-Big Ben Era may be rockier than Tomlin or Steelers fans wish.

Pittsburgh has won four of five, seemingly in desperate pursuit of rescuing what could have been an abysmal season. The defense has started to channel the 1970s Steel Curtain. In each of its last four games, Pittsburgh’s D has allowed just one touchdown. That includes a 16-14 loss to the Ravens in Week 14. That’s the Steelers’ only loss since before Thanksgiving, and it feels like the Black and Gold have pride again, which means this game should be tight.

But the Ravens’ defense, third stingiest in the NFL at surrendering points, tilts this one in favor of the home team. Plus, the possibility of shifting their first-round playoff game from the road to M&T Bank Stadium, is enough to motivate Baltimore to cover the 2.5-point spread.
