Townsend committed to Tennessee on June 24th after camping with the Vols earlier in the month. The Vols were in desperate need of a quality punter in this year’s class and the addition of Townsend was crucial.

How He Fits
While the recruiting rankings may make it seem like Townsend is a below average prospect, don’t be fooled. Most sites rarely spend time evaluating special teams players and Tommy is one of the top punters in the country. He was recently named as the nation’s best after attending the Kohl’s Kicking and Punting Camp.
With Matt Darr leaving after this season, Townsend will immediately be needed to fill the void. He has a strong leg and his punts consistently deliver on both hang time and distance. With Aaron Medley signing in the 2014 class the Vols look to be set at the kicker position, giving Townsend the opportunity to focus strictly on punting while in Knoxville. Given the current depth at the position, expect Townsend to start immediately for the Vols in 2015 and keep the job for four years if he stays healthy.
