Current role: RBs coach and co-offensive coordinator at Arizona
The connection: Was the offensive coordinator at West Virginia when Jones was the WRs coach for the Mountaineers from 2005-06
Pros: Much of Jones’ offensive philosophy has roots in Rich Rodriguez’s spread offense, which Magee is incredibly familiar with as a coordinator under Rodriguez at multiple schools. There’s a natural connection between Jones and Magee, Magee knows how to call plays and could be looking to take over full OC duties since he currently splits them in Arizona. He played in the NFL, has ties all over the South and really makes a lot of sense for what UT is looking for.
Cons/Questions: There aren’t a ton, really. Would Magee leave Rodriguez, the man he’s worked for and had a ton of success under? Some reports out of Arizona suggest that he wouldn’t be interested. And Magee, though a native of Louisiana and a former coach at South Florida, has never coached in the SEC before.
