Rocky Top League Update: 6/15

Armani Moore-1-5The annual Rocky Top League is underway at Knoxville Catholic with games going every Monday and Wednesday until the finals on July 1. Check in with RockyTopInsider.com for game capsules and updates from some of the current Vols as well.

June 15:

Game 1: DeRoyal Industries 112, Knoxville News Sentinel 99

Playing some point guard and on the wing, Vol newcomer Shembari Phillips led the way with 26 points as the DeRoyal Industries team pulled away late for a win over the News Sentinel team, which was led by former Vol point guard Bobby Maze  (34 points) and Vol freshman Ray Kasongo. Tennessee freshman Kyle Alexander had a big game, often battling new teammate Ray Kasongo in the post, on his way to 25 points in his Rocky Top League debut.

“It was fun,” Alexander said of battling Kasongo. “In practice we always go after each, so it was really interesting to go after each and show what we could do.”

Game 2: Campus Lights 122, Rice Buick GMC 100

Armani Moore, who showed why he might be the early favorite for league MVP, may have turned in the performance of the night, but Detrick Mostella might have notched the highlight of the summer late in the first half when he climbed every rung on the ladder and posterized Moore with a vicious dunk on an in-bounds play. Moore would get the last laugh, however, claiming both the victory and the night-one scoring title for the RTL with a 48-point performance. Former Vol Brandon Lopez notched 20 points for the Campus Lights squad, while Detrick Mostella poured in 26 points for Rice on 12-of-30 shooting, which included a stunning (not in a good way) 2-of-14 from the three-point line. Derek Reese also added 11 points for Rice.

*Jabari McGhee (Campus Lights) did not play due to a minor ankle injury suffered earlier this week.

Game 3: Tillman Companies 128, H3 Sports 105

Robert Hubbs III scored 28 points in the win for Tillman – all without ever changing the expression on his face – while Kevin Punter (who has maintained his smooth stroke) dropped in an impressive 38 points for H3 in defeat. Newcomer Admiral Schofield, who resembles more of a linebacker than a forward, had 12 points on 3-of-17 shooting from the field, but made zero of his 10 3-point shot attempts.
