The huge knock on the staff coming into the season was that it couldn’t finish off big games. And after some uncharacteristically slow starts, it made a statement in that area in a big way against Virginia Tech, Florida and Georgia this year. The staff deserves a lot of credit for that. Injuries have made it tough on everybody – the coaching staff included. It’s tough to fault the staff for the two recent losses too much, though the Alabama blowout loss certainly left plenty of questions across the board.

And there are fair questions to ask about this staff. Has it gotten the most out of UT’s talented playmakers this year? Is it too conservative at times? Why has the O-line struggled? Can it do more to help UT’s banged-up defense?

But it is a results-oriented business, and the staff that seemingly couldn’t finish off games has found a way to get this team, despite the rash of injuries, to 5-2 and in position to compete in the SEC East. There’s a lot to be said for that.
