Breaking Down the Vols’ 2017 Recruiting Class

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Commitments: Jordan Murphy (3-star, WR), Princeton Fant (3-star, WR), Jacquez Jones (3-star, WR), James Brown (3-star, TE)

The Vols have a bevy of commitments at wide receiver so far in the 201 recruiting cycle. Three three-stars have pledged commitments to Tennessee in this class, and all three bring something different to the table.

Jordan Murphy is the highest-rated of the trio of receivers. Murphy is rated as the 45th-best receiver in the 2017 cycle, and he put up impressive numbers as a senior at Hattiesburg High School in Mississippi. Murphy hauled in 78 receptions for 1,695 yards and 21 touchdowns in his final season of high school according to Max Preps. Murphy was also used as a punt and kick returner for Hattiesburg.

Princeton Fant is more of a big-bodied receiver at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, and he is listed as the 26th-ranked in-state recruit. Fant hails from LaVergne, Tennessee and unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury in mid-September during his senior season.

Jacquez Jones is the type of receiver Butch Jones and his staff love to have playing out of the slot position. Jones is 5-foot-11 and was used in a multitude of ways at Clearwater High School in Florida. As a senior, Jones nabbed 57 passes for 1,004 yards and 10 scores while also carrying the ball 23 times for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Jones also returned both a punt and kick for a touchdown as a senior. Jones has offers from Miami and Kentucky among others.

The Vols only have one tight end committed in their 2017 class currently, and that commitment belongs to three-star James Brown. As a senior, Brown did a little bit of everything for Jones High School in Orlando. Brown attempted 19 passes and completed 16 of them for 135 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Brown carried the ball 15 times for 170 yards and three scores while catching 10 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns.

Tennessee may look to add another receiver or tight end in their class if room will allow it.
