The Tennessee football department has officially made the call and will open up walk-on student tryouts after the fall semester begins. The announcement was posted to Twitter on Saturday night by Tennessee Football.

Even though Tennessee gave a general time range, they did not announce a specific date. The University will officially begin fall classes this Wednesday, Aug. 18.

However, Tennessee also mentioned that a student must meet three sets of criteria to be eligible to participate in the walk-on tryout.

First, the student “must be enrolled full time at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.” Secondly, the student “will be required to provide a medical physical,” which must be from within the last six months.

Lastly, the student “will be required to provide proof of medical insurance.” The post also closed by noting that the “tryout date will be after fall semester begins, date TBD.”

The Tennessee football program did hold walk-on tryouts each year from 2015-2018. However, Jeremy Pruitt and the football program did not continue the tryouts in his second or third season. Although now, in 2021, it looks like the athletic department and head coach Josh Heupel will bring back walk-on student tryouts in his inaugural season.

During the 2015 and 2018 seasons, Tennessee held their walk-on tryouts in January. However, in 2016 and 2017, Tennessee slated the event in August.

The Tennessee football team is heading into their third total week and second full week of fall camp. Coach Josh Heupel and his staff have been hard at work to prepare the team for the season. With as much off-season turmoil as Tennessee had, a fresh-start in the facility has been a welcome change. Especially for the players, both new and returning.
