Highly Sought After Transfer Chooses Georgetown Over Tennessee, Others

LSU transfer guard Brandon Murray announced he is headed to Washington D.C. to attend Georgetown Monday afternoon.

Murray was one of the top players in the transfer portal after averaging 10 points and three rebounds as a LSU starter last season.

The 6-foot-5 guard impressed with his defensive prowess and versatility on his way to earning SEC All-Freshman Team honors last season.

Murray received interest from dozens of schools across the country after entering the transfer portal, but Tennessee, Illinois and Georgetown made it in his final group. The shooting guard visited all three schools — starting with Tennessee on Thursday — over the weekend before committing to Georgetown Monday afternoon.

“I picked Georgetown because it’s home,” Murray told On3’s Joe Tipton. “It’s a program that has a lot of potential and needs to be turned around. The relationship with Coach Nickelberry was a big reason as well. He’s someone that I trust with my life so I know he’s got me. Coach Pat (Ewing) and I have a good relationship and I trust him to turn Georgetown back to what it was.”

On the surface, Murray committing to Georgetown is puzzling. The Hoyas struggled massively (6-25, 0-19 Big East) this past season and head coach Patrick Ewing’s seat is heating up ahead of the 2022-23 season.

However, there’s been smoke around Georgetown ever since Murray entered the portal with former LSU assistant coach Kevin Nickelberry taking an assistant coach job with the Hoyas this offseason. Georgetown’s campus is also just 43 miles away from Baltimore, Maryland — Murray’s hometown.

Tennessee has four scholarship spots its looking to fill due to offseason departures. Kennedy Chandler declared for the NBA Draft while Victor Bailey Jr, Handje Tamba, Quentin Diboundje and Brandon Huntley-Hatfield entered the transfer portal.

Knoxville Catholic standout B.J. Edwards is Tennessee’s only incoming freshman and the Vols haven’t added anyone in the transfer portal.

With Murray headed to Georgetown it is unclear where Tennessee will turn. The Vols have been linked to Indiana State transfer Tyreke Key and the super-senior played his high school basketball in the Volunteer State at Clay County High School.
