Tennessee Softball Breaks Out the Fur Coat… Because Why Not?

Remember the “Daddy Hat” from Tennessee Baseball last season? Who wouldn’t? The Vols’ home run celebration was taken to new heights this year as the Daddy Hat was now joined by a fur coat as big as the team’s personality.

Fast forward to Sunday.

On Sunday evening in Knoxville, Tennessee’s softball team took a page out of the Vols’ baseball book. Lady Vol catcher Kelcy Leach was the star of the show on Sunday, delivering a walk-off grand slam to defeat Texas A&M on the diamond by a score of 11-8.

As soon as she rounded the bags and touched home plate, a tsunami of celebrations rained down on Leach from her Lady Vol teammates. Freshman infielder Grace Keene was ready and waiting after the celebration as she threw the tan fur coat around Leach’s shoulders. The hero of the game, Kelcy Leach, was now strutting around with a fur coat and pink Daddy Hat as the celebration moved towards the dugout.

There’s something to say about what is building in Knoxville. While this is a small example, it perfectly shows the new attitude of Tennessee athletics in this new era. An attitude that comes from hard work and confidence, an attitude that comes from pride in the University and in the state. An attitude that isn’t always well-liked publically, but is feared by many.

The Lady Vols softball team, ranked 14th in the nation, has every reason to celebrate with the same swag and style that has brought the men’s team up to the number one ranking in the country.

Let’s back up and talk about this fur coat for a second, though… the epic one-day journey for this fur coat.

On Sunday morning, Tennessee basketball center Uros Plavsic made the call on Twitter in search of a fur coat to wear. Luckily for Plavsic, Twitter user Jennifer Morris was ready to answer the call. The two met up on campus before the baseball game, thus setting off an incredible string of events.

A few hours after the coat was given to Plavsic, the Tennessee basketball center was seen with fellow Vols Jahmai Mashack and Jonas Aidoo at the baseball game right smack dab in the middle of the student section.

Following the Tennessee baseball game, Plavsic likely passed off the fur coat to his girlfriend Kiki Milloy, a junior outfielder for the Lady Vols. The Tennessee softball Twitter account even shouted out Plavsic after the game, thanking him “for the new digs.

Tennessee is a pretty neat place when stories like this happen.
